Piles
About Piles
Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum or around the anus. While they are a normal part of the human anatomy, they are considered a disease when they cause symptoms like pain, itching, or bleeding
Types of Piles
Piles are categorized into two types based on their location:
- Internal piles: These form inside the rectum. They are usually not visible or painful, and often, the only sign is bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet.
- External piles: These form under the skin around the anus. They are more likely to be painful, itchy, and swollen.
- Prolapsed piles: In some cases, an internal pile can enlarge and protrude from the anus. This condition can be more painful. Medical professionals grade internal piles on a four-point scale based on the degree of prolapse.
Causes and risk factors
Piles are often caused by increased pressure in the rectal and anal veins. Factors that contribute to this include:
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea: Straining during a bowel movement is a major cause.
- Obesity: Increased body weight puts pressure on the rectal veins.
- Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and the pressure from the growing uterus can cause veins to swell.
- Prolonged sitting: Sitting on the toilet for a long time can increase pressure.
- Heavy lifting: Straining during heavy lifting can increase pressure in the abdomen and rectum.
Treatment and prevention
Many cases of piles can be managed at home, but more severe cases may require medical intervention.
