About Hepatitis

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused by infections (like viruses), alcohol, toxins, or autoimmune disorders, leading to liver damage and symptoms like fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, and dark urine. There are five main types of viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E), which vary in how they spread, their potential severity, and whether they are acute or chronic. While some infections are self-limiting or preventable with vaccines, others like hepatitis B and C can lead to severe, long-term liver damage, including cancer.

Causes

  • Viral infections: The most common cause of hepatitis, with types A, B, C, D, and E being the main strains.
  • Alcohol: Heavy alcohol use can lead to liver inflammation.
  • Autoimmune disorders: In autoimmune hepatitis, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the liver.
  • Toxins and chemicals: Certain substances, drugs, or toxins can cause liver inflammation.

Types of Viral Hepatitis:

  1. Hepatitis A:
Transmitted through contaminated food and water, it typically causes a mild, acute illness that people recover from fully.
  2. Hepatitis B:
Spread through blood, unprotected sex, or from mother to child during birth. It can become chronic and lead to severe liver damage.
  3. Hepatitis C:
Primarily transmitted through contact with infected blood, often from sharing needles or medical equipment. Like hepatitis B, it can lead to chronic disease and liver cancer.
  4. Hepatitis D:
Occurs only in people who are already infected with hepatitis B.
  5. Hepatitis E:
Similar to hepatitis A, it is transmitted through contaminated food and water.
